Here is a video from November 2024. I visited The Longmont Museum’s Dia de Muertos exhibit, which was celebrating loved ones who are no longer with us here on earth. I had been looking for ways to celebrate the lives of both my Dads, who passed away.
I was curious to see what other cultures do, and became interested in the tradition of making a Dia de Muertos(Day of the Dead) altar. I went to a local museum exhibit to find out more about the details of making one.
(My first introduction to this tradition was about 10 years ago from my children’s teacher, Mr. Doug Stahl)
The Longmont exhibit had many altars made by local groups. They were so colorful and beautiful. Seeing all the personal and special ofrendas, or offerings displayed on the altars made me feel like I was getting a glimpse into people’s lives.

Also in this video from Nov 2024: Remembering Ms. LaVern
Lyons’ Community Legend, Ms. LaVern Johnson, had a long tradition of honoring local people. It was so important to her to talk about the history of families of Lyons. Every June the town gathered for the Good Ole Days celebration, where she would speak to us about times from the past.
Ms. LaVern knew everyone and everything. Why wouldn’t she? She came to every event in town!
If you haven’t already heard, Lyons Regional Library is introducing a book that’s been written about Ms. Lavern. It’s called All About Town, by Julie Smith. On Friday, May 9, 2025 from 5:30-7, they will host a book launch party. There will be chocolate pie (yum!) and live music. Proceeds benefit the Lyons Redstone Museum.
